I wanted to thank you all for praying for my Grandpa.  He is back home from the hospital able to enjoy Christmas with family!  He will be 92 the day after Christmas!  Praise God he is okay!  I also wanted to ask for prayer for my family.  My wife and kids are really sick and they need prayer.  It’s a real bummer to have this happening on Christmas Eve, but we are making the best of it.  My wife and son have been fighting it for a few days, then this morning our daughter woke up with a high fever.  My wife has been to the ER for bad pneumonia the last couple years, so I am praying she does not get that again.  I pray the kids don’t get it either.  Everyone is staying encouraged with our eyes on Jesus, but please pray for healing.  Thank you!

Have a wonderful Christmas Eve and Christmas Day!

Grace and peace to you all and Merry Christmas!

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

The Time Joseph & Mary Lost Jesus

Pic quote Luke 2 v 49

Our daughter turned eleven years old this year, so this section of Scripture really hits home with me in a new way at this time in my life.  We also have an eight year old son.  A lost child is a parent’s worst fear.  To be in a crowded place and lose sight of your child for even a moment or to even think for a moment that they are lost is a sickening feeling.  It happened to us this summer at Disneyland when my son ran off and I lost sight of him in a thick crowd for just a few seconds.  I called his name so loud that people turned to look and my son came running out of the crowd to me.  When Jesus was only twelve years old Joseph and Mary lost him for not just a few seconds, but for several days in Jerusalem!  He wasn’t really lost because Jesus was already fulfilling His mission from God, but His parents did not understand that yet.  Where they finally found Him shows us that Jesus was no ordinary child and it reveals His power, wisdom, and authority.

I cannot imagine losing our kids in a crowded city.  They are smart and capable and I have no doubt that they would get help, but we all know how wicked this world is and it can be deadly to children who are alone.  If a child goes missing for several days, it does not usually end up well.  This is the reality of the fallen world we live in.

Joseph and Mary must have been worried sick, but when Jesus went missing, nothing bad happened to Him.  He was kept perfectly safe and He managed just fine on His own.  Of course His parents were an anxious mess like any parent would be frantically looking for their lost child, but Jesus was never in any danger.  So, where did Jesus go and what was He doing?  The answer to that is in the Book of Luke.

“Every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover.  When he was twelve years old, they went up to the Feast, according to the custom.  After the Feast was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it.  Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day.  Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends.”

Luke 2:41-44

If you are parent, at this point you might be thinking, “how do you leave to go on a trip and forget your kid, then travel for an entire day without ever seeing Him?!”  It looks terribly irresponsible, but keep in mind God was at work.  There was a purpose for what Jesus was doing and it was going to end up recorded for all time.  It seems as though God did something to allow Joseph and Mary to travel on without Him in peace.  I am not going to try and guess what God did, but whatever happened they traveled on for a day without their Son.

Jerusalem in our time is about 91 miles away from Nazareth by car.  It would not have been an easy journey by foot.  In my research I found that it would have taken them anywhere from two to five days to walk home.  I don’t know how far they could travel in one day, but they must have been many miles away by the time they figured out Jesus was not with them.

Jerusalem map

“When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him.  After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.  Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.”

Luke 2:45-47

Many people know about Jesus in the temple as a young boy, but not much attention is paid to the fact He was away from His parents and missing for four days.  He wasn’t with them for a whole day of travel, then they had to come back and didn’t find Him until three days after that!  When I read about this, my mind is filled with questions.  What was He doing for those four days?  That’s a good amount of time.  A lot can happen in one day, let alone four!  Where did He sleep for three nights?  What did He eat and who fed Him?  We know God took care of Him and He was safe.  How blessed the people were who must have cared for Him during that time!  I wonder who the people were that made Him meals?  Did He stay at the temple that whole time and even sleep there, or was He staying with a righteous family who helped Him?

We don’t know, but whatever happened over those days and nights Joseph and Mary found Him safe amazing the teachers of the Law with His understanding of Scripture and His answers.  He was amazing them because Jesus is the Word!  He is the Word that became flesh and dwelt among us!  Everything was made through Him and He is full of grace and truth!  He is the life and the light and He was shining on them!

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was with God in the beginning.

Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.  In him was life, and that life was the light of men.  The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.”

John 1:1-5

“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.  We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

John 1:14

That is why Jesus was amazing them!  They could not imagine how well He knew the Scriptures!  Jesus is the Living Word of God!  Jesus was with God in the beginning when He created everything through Him!  Hallelujah!

His parents react like most parents would react and they question Him, but the answer He gives is unlike any answer any human child has ever given.

“When his parents saw him, they were astonished.  His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this?  Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”

“Why were you searching for me?” he asked.  “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”  But they did not understand what he was saying to them.”

Luke 2:48-50

His parents must have been so relieved to find Him and I would have said a similar thing.  “Why did you do this?!” and “What were you thinking?!” would be what I would most likely ask my kids.  I would also be filled with joy at finding them and wrap them in a big hug.  His parents could not answer His amazing questions.  They did not understand that He is God in human flesh and that He came to die for our sins and He was in the midst of that mission even then.  They didn’t understand the power and wisdom their young Son had.  In that moment He was confirming that He was God’s Son, the One and Only who was before time.  He was in His Father’s house and He was at peace and protected.  Even though His parents did not understand, Jesus honored His father and mother and went back home with them to Nazareth.

“Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them.  But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.  And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.”

Luke 2:51-52

Just imagine what Joseph and Mary told their family and friends when they got back home!  That was quite a family memory!  It was not yet His time at the young age of twelve, but He would come back to Jerusalem to fulfill His mission at the age of thirty-three where He would say “It is finished” while upon that cross!  Thank You Jesus for loving us so much that you died for us!  Thank You for forgiving us!  You are the reason we celebrate at Christmas and every day of the year!

Grace and peace to you all!  Have a blessed and very Merry Christmas!

True Repentance

Pic quote Luke 18 v 13

In Luke chapter 18 Jesus tells a parable about the Pharisee and the Tax Collector.  He does this, so that we will not look down on each other in self-righteousness.  He also wants us to know what a true heart of repentance looks like.  To repent means to turn away from sin and turn towards God.  Imagine a person going one way, then doing a 180 degree turn to go the exact opposite way in which they were going.  Repentance in the Greek (the language of the New Testament) is translated metánoia, which literally means to “change your mind” or a “change in the inner man.”  That is what Jesus wants us to do regarding sin.  Turn away from sin and death and turn to Him and live!  He preached that all people need to repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is near (Matthew 4:17).  Turn to Jesus today and receive His forgiveness and love!  He loves you more than you could ever imagine and He will shower you with grace and mercy!  No sin is too big for the Lord.  He will wash away your sins and remember them no more!

With that in mind, here is the parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector.

“To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable:

“Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.  The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men–robbers, evildoers, adulterers–or even like this tax collector.  I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’

“But the tax collector stood at a distance.  He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’

“I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God.  For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Luke 18:9-14

That is a heart of true repentance that stands before God in humility ready to receive the amazing grace of the Lord!

“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.”

Romans 3:23-24

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Romans 6:23

“For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”

Hebrews 8:12

God extends that gift to every person in the whole world!  Now at Christmastime is a beautiful time to receive His free gift of salvation!  He longs to shower you with forgiveness and make you a new creation!  All you have to do is receive it by faith.  God is handing you this precious gift this very moment.  I hope you receive it with joy!

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.”

Romans 8:1-2

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”

2 Corinthians 5:17

“Come now, let us reason

together,”

says the Lord.

“Though your sins are like

scarlet,

they shall be as white as

snow;

though they are red as

crimson,

they shall be like wool.”

Isaiah 1:18

We receive Jesus Christ by faith and we are saved by grace.  No matter who you are and no matter what sins and burdens you are carrying, lay it down to Jesus and He will lift you up!  Let Him wash away all of your sins and make you a new creation filled with the power of the Holy Spirit!  It all starts with having the true heart of repentance Jesus told us about.  Turn to Jesus today and receive Him by faith.  He will never leave you nor forsake you and He will receive you as His own!

“Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God–children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.”

John 1:12-13

“That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Romans 10:9

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God–not by works, so that no one can boast.”

Ephesians 2:8-9

“And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation.  Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession–to the praise of his glory.”

Ephesians 1:13-14

There is no boasting in Heaven folks.  We are not saved by works.  We are not righteous in ourselves and we never will be.  We all need forgiveness and not one can look down on another.  We are only made righteous in the sight of God through faith in Jesus Christ!

“David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:

“Blessed are they

whose transgressions are

forgiven,

whose sins are covered.

Blessed is the man

whose sin the Lord will

never count against

him.”

Romans 4:6-8

Come to Jesus!  He is the wonder and miracle of Christmas!  He will forgive you and never count your sin against you, and that is the most incredible gift ever given to us!

Grace and peace to you all in the precious Name of Jesus!

The Blessings of Simeon & Anna

Pic quote Luke 2 v 29 v 32

Good morning everyone!  I want to start by thanking you all for your prayers for my family.  My Grandpa is still in the hospital, but he is doing better.  He is with family and he is getting the care he needs right now.  He believes in Jesus and the Lord is with him!  The Lord showed me a really cool section of Scripture today (I think the whole Bible is really cool)!  I was thinking about the birth of Jesus and Christmas, so I opened up the Book of Luke.  I started reading in Chapter 2 verse 21 about Jesus being presented in the Temple eight days after He was born.  That section of Scripture is right after the historical account of the shepherds and the angels and it talks about two people who were a blessing to Joseph and Mary after Jesus was born.  May I introduce you to the servants of the Lord named Simeon and Anna and how they were a blessing.

“On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise him, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he had been conceived.

When the time of their purification according to the Law of Moses had been completed, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”), and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”

Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout.  He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.  It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.  Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts.  When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:

“Sovereign Lord, as you

have promised,

you now dismiss your

servant in peace.

For my eyes have seen

your salvation,

which you have prepared

in the sight of all

people,

a light for revelation to the

Gentiles

and for glory to your

people Israel.”

The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him.  Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed.  And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”

Luke 2:21-35

Wow!  Can you imagine if somebody said that about your child?  What a blessing!  And the soul piercing sword?  Mary had no idea that Jesus would later be crucified for the forgiveness of the whole world’s sins.  The Holy Spirit was upon Simeon and the Lord spoke through him in power!  I think it is beautiful that the Lord promised that to Simeon and he was blessed to see the baby Jesus with his own eyes and hold Him!  He held Jesus when He was just a precious baby at eight days old and he gave glory to God as he preached a powerful message of who Jesus truly was and why He was born!  Simeon waited patiently and faithfully, and the Lord blessed him to be a blessing to the Savior of the world!  That is just incredible, praise God!

Right after that amazing encounter, Joseph and Mary meet a woman named Anna who had the gift of prophecy.  A prophet or prophetess is someone who speaks messages that come directly from God.  In the simplest explanation, they speak God’s truth and they are quite literally God’s messengers.  Let’s take a look.

“There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher.  She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, and then was a widow until she was eighty-four.  She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying.  Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.”

Luke 2:36-38

It is so beautiful that the Lord chose Anna to see her Savior with her own eyes and preach about Him right then and there!  She had lost her husband only seven years after getting married and she stayed single for the rest of her life.  She suffered a terrible loss, but remained faithful to the Lord.  As we see, the Lord was so very faithful to her and He blessed her to preach about Jesus and the redemption He would bring!  Amen Lord, thank you for using us for your glory!  Thank you for the blessings of Simeon and Anna!

After all of the amazing events of the shepherds and angels, the Magi’s visit, and these amazing events at the Temple, Joseph and Mary returned home to raise Jesus.

“When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth.  And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.”

Luke 2:39-40

This Christmas, may we remember the Lord’s faithfulness to Simeon and Anna and may we remember their patient trust in the Lord.  God is so very faithful to all of us and I pray we would all be faithful to God, not just during this season of celebration, but every day in all things.  I can’t imagine what it must have been like holding Jesus at eight days old, but I am sure anyone who held Him could feel His power flowing through them.  Makes me want to take a knee and bow just thinking about it!  Jesus is Lord!  Glory to God in the highest!

Grace and peace to you all and Merry Christmas!

A Glimpse of Heaven

Pic quote Rev 22 v 1 v 5

What an amazing and beautiful description of Heaven!  Rest in that comforting truth today.  When you believe in Jesus for the salvation of your soul, nothing can take that great hope away from you!  Nothing can snatch you out of His hand.  Once you belong to Jesus, you belong to Him forever and that section of Scripture in Revelation gives us an excellent glimpse of what Heaven will be like!

I love what the next verse in that section of Scripture says.

“The angel said to me, “These words are trustworthy and true.  The Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, sent his angel to show his servants the things that must soon take place.”

Revelation 22:6

Angels are so cool and there are a lot of them in Heaven!  God’s Word is trustworthy and true and we can rest in the promise of Heaven through faith in Jesus Christ.  In chapter 21 of Revelation John talks about the Holy City he witnessed coming down out of Heaven.

“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.  I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.  And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them.  They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.  He will wipe every tear from their eyes.  There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!”  Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

He said to me: “It is done.  I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End.  To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life.  He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son.”

Revelation 21:1-7

Heaven is a place of perfect peace!  There is no pain or darkness there.  It is a place of perfect love, peace, and light!  The one who overcomes will inherit Heaven, so who is it that overcomes and what are we overcoming?  Jesus taught us the answer to both questions.

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.  In this world you will have trouble.  But take heart!  I have overcome the world.”

Jesus speaking in John 16:33

Jesus overcame the world when He defeated sin and death at the cross!  He destroyed the work of the evil one and He offers us that same victory!

“Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well.  This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands.  This is love for God: to obey his commands.  And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world.  This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.  Who is it that overcomes the world?  Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.”

1 John 5:1-5

Faith in Jesus Christ=Victory over the world!  What is the world?  You know it.  We all do.  It’s this place of sin and death that we live in.  The fallen sinful state of this world has hurt all of us and if you are human, then you have experienced the suffering of this world at some point in your life.  God has given us a way out and that free gift of eternal life is offered to every human being on earth.  He rescued us through the perfect atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ and you can only be saved through faith in Him alone.

“But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.  This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.  There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.  God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood.  He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished–he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.”

Romans 3:21-26

Here is another glimpse of Heaven from Revelation.  Here is what the Holy City of Heaven looks like!

“The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass.  The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone.  The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, the fifth sardonyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst.  The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl.  The great street of the city was of pure gold, like transparent glass.

I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.  The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.  The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it.  On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there.  The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it.  Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.”

Revelation 21:18-27

That is an incredible glimpse at the glory and beauty of Heaven!  Do you want your name written in Jesus Christ’s book of life?  Then receive that victory and believe in Jesus!  He will forgive you of every sin and purify you, so that you stand holy and redeemed before God!  Amen!

“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.  If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.  But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”

1 John 1:5-7

“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.  If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.”

1 John 1:8-10

“That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.  As the Scripture says, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame.”  For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile–the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Romans 10:9-13

I will end with some words Jesus said.  No matter where you live or who you are, Jesus is inviting you to Heaven!  That promise can be yours this very moment!

It’s up to you to accept His offer by faith.

“From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”

Matthew 4:17

“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life.  He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.  Do you believe this?”

John 11:25-26

“Do not let your hearts be troubled.  Trust in God; trust also in me.  In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you.  I am going there to prepare a place for you.  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.  You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Jesus in John 14:1-4

Keep the Word of God deep in your hearts and be blessed!  The Kingdom of Heaven is near and all those who believe in Jesus are promised a place there!

Grace and peace to you all!
