We Celebrate Love, But What Is Love?

Hello everyone!  I didn’t write a post yesterday because I have been spending time taking in what the Lord did for my wife and praising Him.  Even though the Lord has done so many amazing miracles in my life before, it is still a bit overwhelming when He moves in power like that.  You are awesome God!  Thank You Jesus!  The Lord has strengthened our family greatly and we are at peace.  He helped me take it all in and He moved in my heart this morning to get back to writing.  When the Lord does a miracle, we praise Him, then keep moving forward in Him!  So, Valentine’s Day is tomorrow and millions (possibly billions) of people around the world will be celebrating love.  There is just one problem.  Most of us don’t even know what love truly is.  We can only discover what love truly is when we look to the One who created us.

Why is that?  Because the Word of God, the Bible, teaches us that God is love.  If you want to know love, then you need to know God.  The One who created you.  The lover of your soul!  In order to know God, then you need to know Jesus who is God in human flesh and the manifestation of God’s love for the whole world!

“And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.  If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God.  And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.  God is love.  Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.”

1 John 4:14-16

How do we know God loves us?  Because He came to earth to die for us, so we could be with Him in Heaven forever!  Jesus is the only One who ever died for our sins to be forgiven!

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

John 3:16

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.  And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.”

1 John 3:16

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Romans 5:8

Jesus is true love folks!  What He did for us on that cross is true love!  We celebrate love because God is love and love comes from God!  God loves us, so He makes it very clear what love is in His Word.  He wants us to love each other in this way!  The most excellent way!

“…And now I will show you the most excellent way.

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.  If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.  If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind.  It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.  Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails…”

1 Corinthians 12:31, 13:1-8

“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love.  But the greatest of these is love.”

1 Corinthians 13:13

Now you truly know what love is!  It is also crucial to remember that because God is love, He is also all of those attributes of love that the Apostle Paul wrote about.  That definition of love is who God is.  That is the very essence of His character!  God is patient, God is kind.  He does not envy, He does not boast, He is not proud.  God is not rude, He is not self-seeking, He is not easily angered, He keeps no record of wrongs.  God does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  God always protects, God always trusts, God always hopes, God always perseveres.  God never fails!  Faith, hope, and God remain, but the greatest of those is God!

As we celebrate love, may we celebrate the One who gave us love and praise His Holy Name!  We know what love is because Jesus died for us!  It is God’s love that sets us free and that my friends is a true love worth celebrating!

Grace and peace to you all in the loving Name of Jesus!

  1. Years ago I watched a movie from the 1940s where a young woman asked her mother how she’d recognize true love. The mother explained (and demonstrated) that she would know true love when she kissed a man and her lower leg rose behind her. The world has no idea.

  2. Love this so much!! We just went to marriage conference this weekend and it was abt loving our spouse better, etc but really how can we do that without the love of God. He loves us so we can love others. Excellent post! Would like to reblog if that’s ok?
